The right to return to the place of origin
(05/06-2008) In an open letter to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) today, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee called for the removal of impediments to the reconstruction of approximately 25 houses in Rudesh village, Istok/g municipality, Kosovo.
In 1999 the inhabitants were evacuated because of continuous violent incidents and threats. Their houses were destroyed.
- “There is a right for these families to return which must be protected. However, the realization of this right is a key part of the UNMIK mandate. The failure to facilitate the return of these families from the Egyptian community could further amount to discriminatory action. Urgent action by UN SRSG could bring the issue forward and allow for the reconstruction of houses and return from displacement for the former inhabitants of Rudesh”, the Helsinki Committee Secretary General Bjørn Engesland said in a statement.
