NHC opens representative office in Almaty
Yesterday the NHC officially opened its representative office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. – I hope and expect that the office will play a constructive role in the civil society of Kazakhstan, said Secretary General Bjørn Engesland in his welcoming address.
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee has increased its focus on the development of an active civil society and democratization in Central Asia over the last years. In that connection, the NHC representative office for Central Asia was officially registered in May 2010 and Parvina Abduvakhobova was employed as a program manager in October the same year.
Around 30 representatives from local human rights organizations, international organizations and the Kazakhstani Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the event.
Engesland expressed his satisfaction with the successful establishment of the office and the extensive network that the NHC already have developed in Kazakhstan. – We are looking forward to working in Kazakhstan and are happy to be here, Engesland concluded. – We are not to be considered competition, but we are here to support and cooperate, and will be critical where criticism is needed.
