PACE adopts landmark decision on the Magnitsky case

During the Winter session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) today, an overwhelming majority voted for the adoption of the report "Refusing impunity for the killers of Sergei Magnitsky"

The report describes in detail the ordeals of the Hermitage Foundation lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and how he was mistreated in pre-trial detention before he was left to die without medical attention. Magnitsky found himself targeted in a criminal investigation after he exposed massive tax fraud within the Russian tax authorities. The report urges Russian authorities to fully investigate the circumstances and background of the death of Magnitsky. PACE resolved to call for targeted sanctions if the competent Russian authorities fail to respond adequately to its demands. NHC welcomes today's decision. The committee has engaged in the Magnitsky campaign the last few years and is present in Strasbourg during the Winter session this week.
