Support IFEX campaign for Iryna Khalip
Write Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenka and ask for an end to the harassment of journalist Iryna Khalip.
The Global Network For Free Expression (IFEX) calls upon our friends and collaborators to support IFEX’ campaign on behalf of Belarusian journalist Iryna Khalip. Norwegian PEN and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee warmly support the campaign and encourage you to do the same.
Iryna Khalip, Minsk journalist for the investigative paper Novaya Gazeta (the paper of slain Russian reporter Anna Politkovskaya) and wife of previously imprisoned opposition politician Andrei Sannikov, is currently living under house arrest because of her reporting and her role in the protests surrounding the December 2010 fraudulent presidential election.
In addition to the house arrest, Khalip has been subject to repeated harassment in the form of visits by the police, often in the middle of the night, traumatizing her young child. She has also been receiving anonymous death threats.
The Norwegian Helsinki Comittee asks you to write Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, requesting the end of the police visits to Khalip's home, that the conditions of her house arrest comply with international standards, that the charges against Iryna Khalip are dropped in compliance with the declaration on human rights which guarantee the right to freedom of expression and assembly, and that those responsible for threatening Khalip and her child be brought to justice.
