Gannushkina and Memorial nominated
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee is pleased to note media reports that the Norwegian parliamentarian Erna Solberg, the Conservative party leader, has nominated the Russian NGO ‘Memorial’ and Svetlana Gannushkina to the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
-Truly deserving candidates, Secretary General Bjørn Engesland says. -Memorial, and in particular Svetlana Gannushkina, are
some of the most efficient activists in Russian civil society today, who works with the most sensitive issues often at great
danger to themselves. Gannushkina has in particular engaged in the victims of the conflict in Chechnya.
Erna Solberg underlines that the reason for her nomination is that Memorial is a grassroot organisation that helps people take care of their human rights.-Their work has been so controversial that two of its activists have been abducted and killed, she says.
