Meet Oleg Orlov

Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Memorial’s Oleg Orlov was newly freed in the prisoners’ exchange with Russia. We are so happy to receive him in Oslo, and we want to give you the opportunity to meet him, too! Hear him speak at our breakfast meeting.

What has he experienced? How is life in a Russian prison? Is there hope for a democratic Russia and an end to the war?

Oleg Orlov is a veteran human rights defender, one of the founders and co-chair of the well-known prominent human rights organisation Memorial, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. Memorial is a longtime partner of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

Until recently, Oleg was a political prisoner in Russia. He was arrested and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for “discrediting Russian armed forces”. His crime was to write an article in international newspapers where he condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine and called the Russian regime totalitarian and fascist. Oleg became part of the prisoner exchange with Russia this summer and was released together with 15 other political prisoners.
