Wise and timely Peace Prize

‘This year's Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo addresses the nuclear threat that once again hangs over a world characterised by wars and conflicts. This reminds us of the enormous cruelty and suffering that nuclear bombs represent. We congratulate Nihon Hidankyo,’ says Berit Lindeman, Secretary General of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

Nihon Hidankyo is a Japanese organisation for survivors of the atomic bombs at the end of World War II. Their goal of a world free of nuclear weapons is more important than in many decades. Earlier this year, the organisation strongly protested Russia’s deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. They also address US deployments in NATO countries.

‘Constant threats from Russia to use nuclear weapons mean that this year’s Peace Prize is timely. Next year marks the 80 years since the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This Peace Prize reminds all countries that this must never happen again,’ says Lindeman.

‘We see that the nuclear threat is increasingly connected to the ongoing wars and conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. The threat is also highly relevant to Japan’s neighbourhood. We hope the Nobel Peace Prize will help to show world leaders that nuclear weapons must never be used,’ concludes Berit Lindeman.
