Sara is our Communications Adviser, collaborating closely with the Director of Communications and the Senior Communications Adviser.
Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sara brings extensive experience in communications, international politics, human rights, minority rights, and democracy. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in World History, a postgraduate degree in International Journalism, and a Master’s in Human Rights from the University of Oslo. Her Master’s thesis focused on the practical implementation of human rights in context, emphasising legal developments in Brazil.
Before joining the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Sara served as the Communications and Advocacy Adviser for the International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief (IPPFoRB), where she worked with parliamentarians from diverse countries to promote and protect the right to freedom of religion or belief.
Sara is passionate about storytelling in all its forms. She has developed and led advocacy campaigns, produced video content, and worked with politicians and human rights defenders worldwide to amplify crucial human rights messages. In 2022, she covered the Brazilian presidential elections for the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.
My passion for communicating the importance of human rights comes from growing up in a country where democracy is constantly threatened, and human rights defenders face significant risks. I’ve seen firsthand the impact when these issues are misunderstood or ignored. That’s why I believe it’s essential to tell these stories clearly and effectively—because when we fail to convey the message of human rights, the consequences can be devastating.
From 2014 to 2023, Sara led Rede Amando in Rio, a social project dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and exclusion through food security and educational opportunities.
