INTERPOL must address misuse by Turkish authorities

The organization must take appropriate actions to comply with its human rights obligations and protect individuals against abuse by Turkey of its Stolen and Lost Travel Document (SLTD) database, a group of human rights groups and experts says in an open letter to Jürgen Stock, The Secretary-General of Interpol. The Arrested Lawyers Initiative (TALI) and Human Rights Defenders e.V. (HRD) have coordinated the advocacy action, which the Norwegian Helsinki Committee has joined.

– INTERPOL’s systems have been criticised for a number of years for the ease with which they can be abused by authoritarian states. It’s time for the organisation to close any remaining loopholes to avoid being complicit in human rights abuses, said Gunnar M. Ekeløve-Slydal, Deputy Secretary General.
