Investigative journalism in Ukraine: Accountability under fire

Investigative journalism in Ukraine is under immense pressure due to Russia’s full-scale war of aggression. With institutions strained and corruption risks heightened by emergency procurement and foreign aid management, rapid decision-making, and the sheer scale of wartime expenditures, the need for independent investigations has only grown. Despite these challenges, Ukrainian journalists have continued to expose wrongdoing and inform the public.

The threats against independent journalism are many: desinformation campaigns, reduced resources, shifting government priorities, political pressure, and attacks ranging from harassment to intimidation by oligarchs and state-linked actors. Still, Ukrainian journalists and civil society organisations have demonstrated remarkable resilience.

We support this work by partnering with independent media organisations that investigate corruption, misuse of public funds, and governance failures across the country.

Bihus.Info leads the Nansen‑project’s investigative journalism component. In 2025, their team completed a full year of media production dedicated to transparency and accountability. They produced 34 investigations addressing issues ranging from corruption in public administration to regional governance failures and wartime security risks. Their reporting reached around 25 million viewers across social media and partner outlets, generating more than one million interactions. Several investigations prompted concrete responses from public authorities and private actors.

In addition to supporting investigative journalism, the Nansen‑project provides small grants to civil society organisations working to strengthen Ukraine’s media environment. One example is the Ukrainian Media and Communication Institute, an independent analytical and educational centre that promotes media literacy, counters information threats, and supports ethical, inclusive media practices. Their project focuses on identifying and reducing ageism in Ukrainian media, raising awareness among journalists, and ensuring that older people are represented with dignity and accuracy.
