A peace prize for a democracy activist

– It is gratifying that this year's Norwegian Nobel Committee is emphasising the work to promote democracy at a time when it is under threat. Democracy activist María Corina Machado is a courageous woman who has taken significant risks, says Berit Lindeman, Secretary General of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

The NHC congratulates María Corina Machado, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work for democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.

‘María is a shining example of a woman fighting for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Not least, her work for free and fair elections through her election observation work has been important for a country and a region that often is combined with authoritarian leaders,’ says Berit Lindeman.

The unstable situation in Venezuela requires increased international attention. Nearly 8 million people have fled due to the Maduro regime’s repression and economic failures.

‘We commend that the Prize highlights the human rights of the Venezuelan people and the opposition and hope it will bolster the fight for democracy in the country,’ says Lindeman.

‘We are pleased that the Nobel Committee has selected a Peace Prize winner in line with Nobel’s will, which clearly states that the winner should promote human rights and democracy,’ concludes Berit Lindeman.
