Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has resulted in enormous civilian suffering, destruction of critical infrastructure, unprecedented refugee flows in Europe since the Second World War, and extensive war crimes. At the side event, we will discuss realistic outcomes of the ongoing justice efforts in relation to the war in Ukraine, including the prospects of prosecuting the Russian leadership for the crime of aggression. We will address the need for an unequivocal international legal response for all victims, as well as for the State of Ukraine. Without accountability, there can be no lasting peace.
The side event is hosted by MP Siv Mossleth, Head of the Norwegian delegation and MP Mykyta Poturaiev, Head of the Ukrainian delegation in cooperation with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee. They will both be a part of the panel.
Panelists include Mr Mark Kersten, Assistant Professor, University of the Fraser Valley; Ms Rachel Denber, Deputy Director, Europe and Central Asia Division, Human Rights Watch; and Mr Gunnar M. Ekeløve-Slydal, Deputy Secretary General, Norwegian Helsinki Committee.
There will be video messages from Mr Roman Avramenko, Director of Truth Hounds, and Ms Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of The Centre for Civil Liberties, which received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.
