While Myanmar has made significant progress since 2010 as regards freedom of the press and the release of many political prisoners, it still has a long way to go concerning the inclusion of ethnic minorities, freedom of religion and the use of forced labor by the army. Many are also still imprisoned solely because of political activities.
In the letter, which will be delivered to Minister for the President’s Office U Soe Thein today, the President is called to end the practice of land confiscation and forced labor, to immediately release prisoners of conscience and ensure due process for prisoners who have been arbitrarily detained or unfairly tried, end the marginalization of ethnic and religious minorities including Rohingya Muslims and Kachin and Chin Christians, and ensure respect of the right of all to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including persons belonging to minorities.
