Against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing full-scale war against Ukraine, we explore the challenges and responsibilities of journalism in times of conflict, as experienced both by journalists in Ukraine reporting from the frontline and by Russian journalists in exile. Russia’s brutal warfare is accompanied by military censorship, propaganda, and extreme repressions, including laws criminalizing independent journalism. How do independent journalists navigate the Kremlin’s crackdown on media and disinformation campaigns? Is the free media of Ukraine today a bulwark for European journalism, and can a prosperous media freedom in Ukraine ultimately lead to change in Russia? How do Russian disinformation campaigns targeting Norway, Ukraine, and Europe at large correspond with the battlefield in Ukraine? The program also includes discussions on how Russian propaganda and hybrid operations inform realities in Norway’s northernmost borderlands with Russia.
The last part of the program is devoted to the documentation of war crimes and the establishment of a Special Tribunal for Russia’s crime of aggression against Ukraine.
