A timely award and a deeply deserving laureate: Unikuir received the Kim Friele Award

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee extend our warmest congratulations to the organization Unikuir, who has been awarded the Kim Friele Award 2026. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the organization's tireless commitment to advancing equality, visibility, and human rights for LGBTIQ+ people.

Unikuir has been a valued partner of us over the past years, and we consider them to play a vital role in creating safer spaces, strengthening community solidarity, and advocating for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals. Through its dedicated work, Unikuir has helped amplify voices that are too often marginalized and has contributed significantly to the ongoing struggle for a more inclusive and equitable society.

And not without a cost!

In Türkiye, LGBTIQ+ activists, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations continue to face increasing challenges. Activists are subjected to investigations and prosecutions, public events are restricted, and political actors repeatedly seek to introduce legislation and policies that target LGBTQ+ people and undermine their fundamental rights. These developments create an increasingly difficult environment for those working to defend equality, freedom of expression, and freedom of association.

Despite these difficulties, Unikuir has consistently defended the community, spoken out against injustice, a great personal risks. Last year, their adviser Enes Hocagulliari was arrested and imprisoned after speaking out against police brutality in the Council of Europe. He was released and aquitted after massive international pressure.

The Kim Friele Award is a fitting recognition of Unikuir’s significance. We believe that Kim Friele would have appreciated the laurates – brave frontrunners fighting for justice, never giving up – even when everything might look hopeless.

Heartfelt congratulations to this unique group, and not the least – welcome to Oslo Pride!

You can meet them at the event On the frontline: Queer activists defending democracy at Pride House in Oslo, Wednesday 24 June at 14:00.
